July 2011

Sangria

Serves 4 - 6

1 bottle fruity red wine, such as a garnacha
5 tablespoons brandy
¼ cup Cointreau, or other top-quality orange-flavored liqueur
¼ cup vodka
1 splash ruby port
1 orange, sliced into wheels and quartered
2 Granny Smith apples, cored and diced
1 cinnamon stick
1 strip lemon zest
¼ cup fresh orange juice
1 splash soda water
Fresh mint (optional)

Combine the wine, brandy, Cointreau, vodka, port, oranges, apples, cinnamon and lemon
peel in a bowl and refrigerate for at least 4 hours. Pour the mixture into a pitcher filled
halfway with ice. Add the orange juice and soda water, give a quick stir and serve. Be
sure that each glass gets some ice and fruit. Garnish with fresh mint leaves, if you like.
