World Central Kitchen's Global Missions
September 2018
The last year has been a busy one for World Central Kitchen and its Chef Relief Network. This group of culinary first responders acts quickly to set up kitchens and feed those in need in the direct aftermath of disaster. They have been on the front lines after hurricanes, wildfires, mudslides, earthquakes, and volcanoes, and have now prepared more than 4.5 million meals in the last year.
Here are the missions that the team has undertaken in the last year.
Puerto Rico - From the moment José touched down on the island 4 days after Hurricane Maria in September 2017, the #ChefsForPuertoRico team was an active part of the island's rebuilding efforts, preparing more than 3.7 million meals from 26 kitchens across the island.
Southern California - In partnership with L.A. Kitchen, WCK activated kitchens in December 2017 to feed first responders to the Thomas wildfire in Ventura as well as shelters for those displaced by the fire.
Hawaii - The Big Island's Kilauea Volcano covered 12 miles of the island in hot lava and destroyed 700 homes. The team has prepared more than 50,000 meals for the displaced since the volcano erupted in May .
Guatemala - After a volcanic eruption in June that took lives and destroyed homes, the team served more than 300,000 meals to people in need out of three kitchens and six food trucks.
Northern California - WCK activated two kitchens in July to respond to the wildfires that destroyed more than 500,000 acres across the northern half of the state, in partnership with Operation BBQ Relief and the Red Cross of Northern California.
Indonesia - Following a number of catastrophic earthquakes on the Indonesian island of Lombok in August, WCK activated alongside All Hands and Hearts and local partners to provide critical food support to those in need. The #ChefsForIndonesia team has served over 25,000 meals to date.
