January 2017

On September 22nd, José received the National Humanities Medal during a special ceremony at the White House. President Barack Obama paid José one of the highest compliments imaginable, calling him the “quintessential success story.” The award is sponsored each year by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and it highlights twelve individuals who have deepened our country’s culture through their work with history, literature, languages, philosophy, and other humanities subjects.

Chosen for “cultivating the palates and shaping the culture of this nation,” and introducing “new and vibrant ingredients to our nation,” José was recognized for his innovative techniques in the kitchen, his work with clean cooking technology and surrounding education, and the inspiration he provides to new Americans as a naturalized citizen.
