José Receives Honorary Doctorate from Tufts University

May 2018

In recognition of his "commitment to fighting hunger and poverty, and to helping communities empower themselves," José was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Public Service at Tufts University's annual commencement ceremony on May 20, 2018. The school acknowledged José's work with World Central Kitchen in Puerto Rico, Texas, and Southern California, as well as his recognition by the James Beard Foundation, Time Magazine, and President Obama.

In his speech at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts, José gave a message of encouragement to graduates: "You are forging an important new path, one where food and nutrition are not secondary to global issues like poverty, the environment and education, but are actually central to solving those issues."

This was José's second honorary doctorate, having received a Doctor of Public Service degree from George Washington University in 2014.
