José Gives A Cooking Demo At The White House Easter Egg Roll

March 2016

José Andrés brought the power of vegetables to the 2016 White House Easter Egg Roll, the annual tradition that presidents and first ladies have hosted for 138 years running.

From his spot at the “Play with Your Food” stage, José put his fast-casual, veggie-centric restaurant Beefsteak at center stage, showing visitors how flavorful and versatile just one vegetable—the tomato--can be. The demonstration covered how to make the Beefsteak Tomato Sandwich, as well as the classic chilled tomato soup from Spain, Gazpacho. And then he and his team gave everyone a Beefsteak coloring book to take home.

“It’s like a smoothie!” called out one young voice in the crowd, as José used a blender to purée vegetables into delicious gazpacho. “Yes,” José said back, “It’s like a SALAD smoothie!”

Joining José onstage were Beefsteak Executive Chef Pat Peterson, R&D Chef Charisse Dickens, and José’s family. A team of White House chefs stopped by to say hi, including Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford and Executive Pastry Chef Susie Morrison. Sharing the demonstration stage with José this year were celebrity chefs Spike Mendelsohn and Ted Allen.

Over 35,000 people from all 50 states received tickets to this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll. In addition to cooking stations, the event hosted live storytelling, sports demonstrations, and of course, Easter egg rolling.
