José Co-Hosts Street Fight Chef Challenge on Rodeo Drive

May 2016

Rodeo Drive never had it this delicious. This May 11 José Andrés and Wolfgang Puck co-hosted the Street Fight Chef Challenge in the heart of Los Angeles, taking over the city’s swankiest address as part of the Young Presidents' Organization Pacific Edge Block Party. The event saw four chef-testants cooking with secret ingredients for a chance to become champion.

The evening battle benefitted two important causes— World Central Kitchen, José’s humanitarian organization which is focused on finding smart solutions to hunger and poverty; as well as L.A. Kitchen, brainchild of José’s friend and mentor Robert Egger, which uses food that would otherwise be wasted to fuel culinary training for people looking for a new start in life.

Volunteers from L.A. Kitchen’s current culinary class made sure the event ran smoothly. The judges, chefs Susan Feniger, Ludo Lefebvre, and Michael Voltaggio picked the most delectable dishes. A crowd of over 1,000 cheered the chefs on. And celebrity guest Tom Arnold introduced the secret ingredient dear to José’s heart: Jamón Ibérico de Bellota from Fermín- a 48 month cured ham from the legendary, free range, acorn-fed, black-footed ibérico pigs of Spain.

Chef Geter Atienza from L.A. restaurant Broken Spanish won it all with his jamón ibérico tartare. But at the end of the day, everyone was a winner for supporting World Central Kitchen and L.A. Kitchen!
