José Heads Back to Puerto Rico

Fourteen months after Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico, Chef José Andrés has spent many days and weeks on the island with his non-profit World Central Kitchen, serving nearly 4 million meals to people in need throughout the area. Earlier this month, José returned to the island with a very busy schedule: not only did he spend time touring WCK projects and attending Lin-Manuel Miranda's Puerto Rico debut of Hamilton, he also introduced Jimmy Fallon to the island's cuisine.

José's journey also included a trip with entrepreneur and philanthropist Steve Case to visit Parallel 18, an accelerator for startups on the island, as well as a number of WCK Plow to Plate projects like the Doña Inés Arboretum, which built greenhouses to restore native plants destroyed by the hurricane. They visited a rooftop garden in Rio Piedras growing microgreens like spinach, flaxseed, and peas, and a farmer who is using new technology to maximize growth of fresh and healthy food on his small piece of land.

Of course, he had to eat as well! After indulging in "the best chicken in the world" at Maelo's Chicken Fever, he joined Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon for fried treats at El Rinconcito Latino in Piñones. José also told Jimmy about the work that World Central Kitchen has been doing in the aftermath of the hurricane, encouraging viewers to come support the island as it rebuilds.
